Beware the Armed Man: A Popular Song Invades Sacred Renaissance Music

The Late Medieval tune L’homme armé (The Armed Man) was so popular at the beginning of the 15th century that there were over 40 masses written which incorporated the tune in some way. Musica Spei presents a concert featuring sounds of the early Renaissance, written before 1480. We present multiple gems, including mass settings and songs based on L’homme armé. Composers include Dufay, Josquin, Compere and Ockeghem, as well as several who are virtually unknown to modern audiences

The popular secular song, L'homme arme (The Armed Man), was said to have been formally transcribed around 1550. Prior to this time, this tune was spread throughout Europe, perhaps as a warning for the impending invasion of the Ottoman Empire. Composers found ways to incorporate this tune into sacred works, including parts of the mass itself. Musica Spei presents early Renaissance music from this time period, most of which incorporates this popular tune. For the modern listener, this early music, mostly from what is now France and Belgium, is modal, rhythmically complex, and striking to the ear. The audience will hear parts of the mass by various 15th century composers like Johannes Ockeghem, Firminus Caron, Antoine Busnois, and Guilliame Fauges. Composer, Johannes Regis, a contemporary of Dufay, is also featured, and he was one of the first composers to incorporate 5-voice settings of choral works. Another featured composer, Loyset Compere, creates a tribute to his influencers and contempories by naming them in the text of the motet, Omnium honorum plena (Full of all Honors).  Lastly, the audience will hear the L'homme arme tune itself and have the opportunity to sing along with this historic and highly influential song.
