Holding on through Song VI: Exploring the American Negro Spiritual and Celebrating the Legacy of Nathaniel Dett

Hailed in 2018 hailed as “a gut-wrenching, educational and emotional performance that truly rang out to the heavens and called down the Ancestors,” (City Newspaper) First Inversion announces the sixth annual Holding on through Song program, featuring American Negro Spirituals interwoven with readings from formerly enslaved individuals and historic African American leaders.

This year, the concert highlights the music and legacy of R. Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943), grandson of enslaved Americans and the first black graduate of the Eastman School of Music (1932). Each year, this powerful program seeks to deepen community understanding of the historic role of spirituals and their potential in the 21st century to foster awareness and promote healing action. This year the two featured soloists are renowned singers: Mr. Robert Sims, baritone, and Ms. Kearstin Piper-Brown, soprano.  Their participation is sponsored in part by the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Arts and Cultural Initiative from the Rochester Community Foundation.
